3D Secure, is a payments security authentication process that can help prevent fraud and chargebacks.

1. Why 3D Secure

Why 3D Secure?

3D secure helps preventing online credit card fraud.

When a 3D Secure check is made, card brands are more confident the transaction was not fraudulent.

If the transaction is completed and authorized through 3D Secure, the responsibility for any fraud-related chargebacks generally shifts from the seller to the card-issuer.

Please note there is a fee associated to the usage of 3D Secure.

3D secure costs are covered in the payment processing agreement or, if you were using QuoteMachine Payments before August 13, 2024, by the payment processing amendment for 3DS

How to Enable 3D Secure

Within your QuoteMachine account, click into Payment Processing on the left side menu. From there you will see the 3D Secure tab.

You will have 3 options to determine when a transaction should be protected by 3D Secure, including always (any amount), never, or over a specific amount, which you can adjust.

One you click save, all transactions will run with 3D secure on them.

It is important to note that 3D secure requires action from the buyer. This means 3D secure will not be used on any transactions that are processing within the back office of QuoteMachine, for example, using "Charge Card on File".

How to Monitor 3D Secure

To view reporting on 3D secure, you can filter under the Payments tab.

Once you are in the Payments tab, you will need to edit your columns for reporting, to reflect 3D Status, 3D Request and 3D Failed Reason.

Sometimes, 3D secure won't be available, even though it was requested. This happens for example when a card does not support it or when a card brand has not completed the onboarding.

The above report lets you identify transactions that are not protected.

What will the customer experience look like for the buyer with 3D Secure

Sometimes, 3D Secure won’t change their checkout experience at all. However, if the bank determines that additional verification is needed, the customer may usually encounter one of the following:

  • A request to enter a one-time passcode sent via text message (SMS) or email.

  • A prompt for a biometric scan, such as fingerprint or face ID on their phone.

  • A redirection to their bank’s website for verification.

Note: The card issuer determines when payments looks suspicious and what the customer sees when a 3D Secure verification appears on their end. Buyers might recognize this method through the card networks’ brand names, like Visa Secure and Mastercard Identity Check.
